There are very few people in this world who can live alone and even fewer, if any, who can be happy doing it. Humans are social creatures and your success in anything in life depends on them just as much as it does yourself.
You control your own destiny, but you need others to help you along the way, sometimes they will let you down and it’s up to you to pick yourself back up again and press on. For most people their success in anything is intrinsically linked to the people they surround themselves with.
There are three types of people you’ll need on your team to ensure your success. Someone to look up to, someone to look forward to being with and someone to aspire to be. The first and last one may seem to be the same thing at first but there is a subtle distinction so bear with it.
In general, the people you look up to will be people who you want to make proud such as your parents, however, if you’re trying to achieve something specific like lose weight or achieve a goal these should people who’ve already accomplished what you’re trying to achieve.
If what you’re attempting to do has never been achieved, then it should be someone who has gone through similar trials and tribulations to reach their goal. These people don’t even have to be alive. They are the people you idolise because of their achievements.
You don’t need to like them, they may actually be horrible people, people who you wouldn’t associate with on a social basis, but they’ve achieved greatness, the type of greatness you aspire to yourself even if you go about it in your own way.
Then there’s the people you look forward to being with. Your close family and friends, the ones who support you in your endeavours are vital to your success, they’ll be the ones who are there for you when you’re up against a wall.
Many people do what they do to provide for their family, when you come to the end of your life and you’re contemplating the past do you think you’ll regret not doing enough work and spending more time away from your family?
I doubt it, I’m quite confident that it will be the other way around. A good home life will be reflected in everything you do. Make sure you nurture it and give it the time it deserves.
Finally, you need someone to aspire to. The final one should be the same person for everyone. That person is your future self. Who do you want to be in ten years’ time? When you get there the new person you need to aspire to is the person you want to be in the next ten years
You should always aspire to be better, nobody is ever perfect and there’s always room for improvement. Life is a journey; the destination is death and the purpose of the journey is whatever you decide it is.
You should never stop chasing the vision of your future self, no matter how challenging life gets. This is why you should have the first two groups of people on your team, they can and will help you through it. Even the ones who are no longer here or you’ve never met.
When you find yourself up against a wall, ask yourself what your idols would do in this situation. Put yourself in their shoes, consider the challenges they’ve overcome in their lives and how they turned out. Go to your friends and family for emotional support. Consider what type of support you’ll need and go to the people you know can give it to you.
If success was behind a door with many locks, people would be one of the keys. Your idols will help you because they’ve already reached the heights you want to reach. Your friends and family should be the most important people in your life and you’re probably doing what you’re doing specifically for them so nurture these relationships and you should always aspire to be the best person you can be, picture the person you want to be in ten years and do whatever it takes to be that person.
